Posts with tag: "French Bulldog Puppies"

Today we are going to address a few important items when buying a French bulldog, I am going to lay it out on the table as a breeder so as a buyer you know why you are seeing what you are seeing.

1) The Frenchie fad- While frenchies are popping up all over tv and becoming popular little dogs with celebrities(I have contributed with this) this "fad" has nothing to do with the reason frenchies are so high in price, and if for some reason frenchies decline in popularity, you will see that the high dollar mark stays pretty average.

2) I personally advise against rescuing a French bulldog or purchasing them for under $2000.00- Before you go OMG! Keep reading. I have spent many days rehabilitating and rescuing French bulldogs, and I only do not condone it because it is draining in every way and requires a lot more training to handle issues from "puppy mill" dogs, than healthy frenchies, which still can have some problems just from dwarfing a breed. Had I not gone to veterinary school and became a licensed tech, I would not have been able to have the skills to rehabilitate French bulldogs with palette issues, that need to be tube fed or have surgeries on. I would not have known what the real prices vets charge, as sometimes vets can charge an arm and a leg when they know they can make money from these little brachycephalic dogs. I am all for rescue and participate in it. I am stating, do not take it lightly, make sure you are prepared, do your research, and find everything out that your capable of before deciding to embark on rescuing a pup. Also, if there is a kennel( like mine) that you find you love the look of the dog, contact the breeder and ask. There are many times we have retired dogs from a program, from showing, or one that maybe his ear didn't stay up and flops down, that is healthy otherwise, but that we would love to find loving homes for a smaller adoption fee.

Frenchies under $2000, especially online, probably come without papers ,or from a puppy mill(more on pricing shortly) There have been many times where people have stolen my ads and listed my personal dogs for sale as a scam as well. There are groups on facebook that list these known scammers. Make sure if that price is appealing to you, that you check before you make any sort of payments. Do not buy a puppy without talking to a person on the phone, if you are shipping make sure you have paper copies of everything, including a health guarantee and documented receipts.

Okay here's the deal on the price.

When breeding quality frenchies , consider that we have had to at least buy one male, and one female. There's your initial investment of around $5000 each for a quality dog with the unlimited papers, as people do not like to just give away their hard earned dogs pedigrees they have bred for years, shown and researched getting.

Pedigrees are important, it shows a lineage of health and success, when you buy a dog to breed, they need a good pedigree. I have not added in the prices that the American kennel club, or federacion internationale for dogs charges to register each dog and each puppy born to the breeder, or the dna fees those entities charge as well.

Next, normal vet care, vaccines and check ups for these two dogs( example) We can estimate $1000 with blood work and genetic testing.

Then we take them to what is called OFA(orthopedic foundation for animals) where a special licensed vet tests their heart, eyes , ears, hips and knees and scores them so we have a better idea of producing sound healthy babies. These tests run about $250 each, for each body part.

If we show the dog at conformation shows.. your looking at $100-300 a weekend, plus travel if any.

Once we breed the dog, the female needs hormone levels tested for peak ovulation which runs about $65 per test.

Then its breeding time, you pay a vet to artificially inseminate your dog which varies in price as some male frenchies are too short to lock into a female, should you stud your male out, it is safer to inseminate to keep from potential STDs spreading( and yes dogs can carry them) Male studs require a negative brucellosis test as well, so add that into your vet fees.

Ultrasounds are performed for $120 at 45 days gestation on the female to see how many babies and most frenchies are born via C-section.

Bully breeds have bigger heads than bodies when born and if one gets stuck in the birth canal, it can be fatal to all puppies and the mother, so better safe than sorry to do a cesarean.  C- sections run $1200.

So now that we have listed some competitive pricing for French bulldog puppies and breeding them, as well as what goes into breeding quality, healthy puppies from responsible breeders, you have a better idea of why the cost is so high.

Keep in mind, as with anything that reproduces, there are going to be some flukes, some surprises, disappointments and things that are beyond all the health testing and planning we can do.

I hope you are more informed and if you are looking for a Frenchie puppy, you know now where your money is going :) Thanks!

It's Summer and it's hot, We've got some tips to play with your frenchie while keeping them cool and safe!

It may require a little shopping!

First, French Bulldogs have a hard time regulating their body temperatures, so for hot or cold weather, Keeping them comfortable is key.

Here in Florida, We've become professionals in managing them in the hot weather.

Firstly, While many French Bulldogs cannot swim well, An hour at the beach with the sea-breeze, Playing in the surf, they really seem to do well and enjoy. Watch their paws walking in the hot sand, and get the car ac on once you get back to the car, promptly. If you are playing at the beach, or in a home pool, We do recommend having a life jacket on hand for our furry little friends.

Dont have water around! Awesome!

Go grab a cheap Plastic kiddy pool and your frenchie will be so happy.

We like to fill our kiddy pools with cool water, and our frenchies absolutely love laying in it, to make it more fun we make ice pops for them and throw them in the pool and they just go bonkers.

If you want to take a walk, aim for morning or evening when it is cooler, we have a motto that a bored dog is better than a dead dog.

If your frenchies tongue starts to curl out of their mouth, it is time to get them wet, on a cooling mat, or inside asap to avoid over-heating which can be fatal for this smash faced breed. We also like those ice cooling bandanas.

If your on a budget, your local home-goods typically has the cooling mats during the season.

NEVER Leave your pup out in your backyard unattended when temperatures are above 74degrees.

Many of our Frenchie Fams use a doggie stroller for summer strolls through the local greenmarket with a cooling mat under their Puppers.

So, You've brought your Frenchie home and want to take him everywhere, but want to make sure you introduce him properly to all of the big wide world.

Follow our list below and please make sure your puppy has had all his vaccinations for communicable disease before taking him anywhere where other dogs and animals can go. If your puppy is small, please carry hand sanitizer and ask that anyone that wants to pet your Frenchie babe, sanitizes before doing so.

Socialization is a life-long desensitization process of exposing your puppy to every new sound, sight, and situation possible. You want eliminate any adverse reaction and have your dog view these occurrences as normal, and non-threatening, and non-exciting.

The ultimate goal of socialization is to be able to take your dog any place, any situation, and have him stay calm, relaxed and confident. Over-excitement, anxiety, hyperactivity are all unwanted reactions in a properly socialized dog.

How to Socialize Your Dog:

The very first step, regardless of whether your dog is a puppy or an adult dog you've acquired, is enrolling in obedience classes or acquire a personal trainer that focus on positive training methods. This will benefit dogs at any age, and are an important step in socialization and developing a bond between dog and you.

The Next Step:

Arm yourself with treats( frenchies love every type of treats!-no rawhide please) , and off you go. Take your dog out to walk the streets, let him experience cars driving by (safely on leash, of course), people walking past, and the noises of everyday life. Praise and reward any wanted reaction (such as sniffing, walking calmly, sitting politely) and ignore all undesirable reactions (jumping, leash pulling, barking, showing fear), while redirecting attention to yourself, and have him focus on something different.Talking to your pet constantly is actually very good for them and makes them better listeners and well rounded pups.

It is very important to remember to praise and reward as soon as the unwanted behavior stops, but also be very careful to not accidentally reward the unwanted as well. We follow the ignore rule, if your dog is barking and you want it to stop, you wait for the puppy to be quiet and then treat and reward for the quiet.

Take your dog with you everywhere. The ultimate goal of socialization is to have a dog you can take into any awkward, noisy, or crowded area, and he will still behave, and be calm, and relaxed. By continuing this throughout his life, your dog will gain confidence, and keep a steady head wherever he is.

French Bulldogs like any other breed have specific needs and characteristics that will tell you if they are the right choice for you and your family.

French Bulldogs are low in maintenence as far as grooming and excersize but can be high in maintenance in other areas.

These little dogs love to have fun and will require a good variety of play toys.

They love to be outside as they are very curious and often will chase lizards or blowing leaves.

You must be responsible and in tune with your dog as these with the bracycephalic type head that gives them their pushed in faces does not allow for them to regulate heat readily.

Walking on hot days or being outside long periods of time should be avoided or your pet can get very sick or even die from heat exhaustion.

A Spray bottle or cooling pad is recommended  to have on hand for the warmer summer months.

French Bulldogs need a good bath once every other week and do well with grooming wipes in between, taking extra care to wipe clean the folds of there face and skin.

Frenchies often have stomachs' sensitive to certain foods and although they will eat almost anything take notes on any treats that give them an upset stomach.

Training a french bulldog is a relatively easy task as they love treats and adore being lavished with attention.

They are pretty quiet dogs and will do well in a smaller living environment.

We love our frenchies and we are certain that as long as you meet the above requirements and can make sure you can give them what they need then the love these babies will give you is irreplacable and you will love them too!
